Following the great success and appreciation of the inaugural meeting in Singapore in July 2008,
Ten Topics Rheumatology Asia is delighted to announce its next meeting in Manila, Philippines, on 28-29 November 2009.

The meeting is aimed to enhance the concept of “Rumatologie San Frontieres” or “Rheumatology Without Borders”

Objectives of Ten Topics Rheumatology:

To bring in the best and most authoritative speakers in the field of rheumatology and related specialties
To focus on new advances, especially in lupus and the connective tissue diseases
To create a stimulating mix of clinical and basic topics, and topics of popular interest

Lupus Advocacy Week

Presidential Proclamation 1435

The Lupus Community in the Philippines will celebrate the 1^st Lupus Advocacy Week on February 2-8, 2008 as officially proclaimed and signed at the Malacañang by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Proclamation 1435 declares the first week of February every year as “Lupus Advocacy Week”.

On Saturday, 02 February, join hundreds of lupus advocates from across the country who will come together at the SM Mall of Asia for the grand launch of Lupus Advocacy Week, with Hon. Sec. of Health Francisco Duque III, MD as guest of honor. The programme, aptly called “Soaring butterflies by the bay” will feature the Philippine Montessori Center Instrumental Ensemble and various lupus talents.

The First Medical Mission of the Section of Rheumatology, University of Santo Tomas Hospital (USTH)

The Section of Rheumatology, Clinical Immunology and Osteoporosis of the University of SantoTomas (UST) Hospital had their first medical mission for the year last Sunday July 1, 2007. Through the special invitation and arrangements made by Dr. Alberto “Ino” Wonchai, the rheumatology consultants and fellows, and staff of the UST Joint and Bone Center led by Section Chief Dr. Sandra Navarra, participated in this mission. This was held at the lecture hall of the beautiful St Francis Xavier parish cathedral in Nasugbu, Batangas. This medical missiion started with a lay forum about Arthritis and Connective tissue disease given by Dr. Lyndon Llamado. He talked about Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Approximately 60 patients who came from the area of Batangas, received free rheumatology services including patient education (emphasis on regular exercise), medicines, arthrocentesis, and local steroid injections.

The Rheumatology Educational Trust Foundation, Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit organization, which ensures the highest standards of excellence in education, training and research in Rheumatology. It commits itself to providing the best quality of care for the rheumatic disease patient by promoting and strengthening undergraduate medical education in Rheumatology, and by training and supporting rheumatologists to be compassionate, ethical and globally competitive. It promotes and supports continuing medical education and research in the rheumatic diseases, with outputs and advocacies which are recognized and respected by the local and international community. The Foundation complements the programs of, and serves as a liaison between rheumatologists and various other support and regulatory institutions.

The Rheumatology Educational Trust Foundation, Inc. develops and continually evaluates education and training programs in Rheumatology. Through an effective and efficient networking system, it provides access to continuing specialized care of rheumatic disease patients, and medical education updates to graduates of Rheumatology training programs. It initiates, promotes, evaluates, coordinates and supports various research projects in the rheumatic diseases.

Through its continuing education and training programs, the Rheumatology Educational Trust Foundation aims to alleviate the plight of rheumatic disease patients by providing access to competent and specialized care in various parts of the country. By promoting and supporting active research in the rheumatic diseases, RETFI aims to provide a national “Filipino” perspective upon which to base patient management (diagnostic and therapeutic) guidelines in the highest standards of care.
